1968 was the year of Kees Verkerk who won gold during the Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble.
And it was the year of Willem van Hanegem's debut in the Dutch national football team in the friendly match against Scotland (0-0).
But also the year of cyclist Jan Janssen who is the first Dutchman ever to win the Tour de France by riding the Belgian Herman Van Springel out of the yellow jersey in the final time trial.
And of course the year of the first broadcast of the Fabeltjeskrant (a dutch puppet series) on Dutch television.
And closer to home, Princess Beatrix opens the first metro line in the Netherlands in Rotterdam.
But of course much more happened in the world in 1968

With the Prague Spring and its end invaded as troops of the Warsaw Pact Czechoslovakia. There is famine in the Nigerian region of Biafra. Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy are murdered. Students in Paris enter the barricades. Workers join the students. And in the Netherlands there is a call for educational reforms by students. And Heintje Davids (a Dutch singer) will be 80 years old. This is the year 1968, through the eyes of the Dutch NOS Journaal.
But especially 1968 was the year in which our association was founded. On January 12 to be exact, our association was founded by employees of the Botanical Garden in Blijdorp Zoo. They thought that the orchid had to be taken out of exclusivity and that everyone had to come into contact with this fascinating flower.
Of course we did not want to let this joyful fact go unnoticed.
And where can an orchid cociety keep its lustrum party better than between the orchids.
We are therefore very honored that Anco pure Vanda has given us the opportunity to celebrate our anniversary in his beautifully decorated reception room.
